Display complete specs ›Smart Surfing for Mac is designed for web security and offers protection from malicious instant messages, e-mail links that can lead you to dangerous sites, manage online activity and protect you from viruses, worms and Trojans.
The installation was quick and painless, with the whole process taking about three minutes on our MacBook Air. Surprisingly Smart Surfing even includes an uninstall program (most Macs require that you just drag the software's icon to the Trash). The software can be updated via the web, as you'd expect, and over our week long test period each update took between 30 seconds to two minutes.
Smart Surfing sports a clean interface and everything the software does has been compressed into a select few options.
Using the default security settings the software worked diligently and protected our Mac machine from more than a few sites - this was after we deliberately clicked on links we knew were leading us to dangerous websites.
The software's antivirus component is somewhat overzealous however and misdiagnosed a few files we had on our machine. It's not the quickest scanner in the world either, though it doesn't negatively impact system performance.
Unfortunately, Smart Surfing doesn't offer cleaning capabilities when it come across an infected file - you'll have to delete it altogether which isn't ideal.
Verdict: While quite capable, Smart Surfing isn't a comprehensive security solution on its own.
