du has blocked all fake handsets in the UAE, in accordance with the Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRA)'s directive to protect the UAE's consumers from the downfalls of using illegal fake mobile handsets.
As of 24th January 2012, all fake handsets became unusable on the du network and the company will continue to monitor and block any new illegal fake IMEI's seen on the network on an ongoing basis.
The company had previously run a successful SMS campaign, which alerted users of fake mobiles that their handset was unauthorised.
The campaign saw the number of fake mobiles on the du network reduced from 57,338 identified false IMEI's, to a total 17,797 identified devices with unauthorised IMEIs. Of the remaining 17,797 fake mobile devices, 17,095 were owned by individual customers and 702 by enterprise customers.
